In Europe, some of the pesticides belonging to the PFAS family would be much more problematic and harmful than previously imagined. This is the conclusion of a report from the Générations Futures association.

In its report, the Générations Futures association highlights the presence of numerous perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS), also known as “eternal pollutants” in pesticides. It is a very persistent molecule that Europe is also seeking to ban, except for agriculture. PFAS is both a common substance for daily life, since it is used to manufacture Tefal pans or burger packaging. But it is also a very problematic molecule that can remain in the environment for generations.
A sharp increase in the sale of pesticides containing PFAS
Europe is trying to get rid of it. Several countries have submitted a restriction proposal, and it is by analyzing this information that Générations Futures has put its finger on the agricultural use of these PFAS. According to the association, more than 2,300 tonnes of pesticides containing PFAS were sold in France two years ago, a figure that is increasing sharply.
Thirty substances are still authorized and almost a third contain persistent or very persistent molecules. For Générations Futures, this is an introduction, and therefore a deliberate contamination of PFAS in our food and in the environment. But, according to the association, this remains a blind spot in the efforts being made by Europe to try to get out of PFAS.
