The number of prisoners in France broke a new record in March for the sixth consecutive month. Prison density reaches or even exceeds 200% in certain establishments.

The UFAP-UNSa justice union is calling prison staff to strike on Tuesday April 2, France Bleu Occitanie learned from the union. They announced that they would block judicial extractions from 6 a.m. in front of the Muret sites, south of Toulouse, in Albi, Béziers and Nîmes.
The number of prisoners in France reached a new record on March 1, with 76,766 people incarcerated, or 4,415 more than the previous year. The government has announced 15,000 new places by 2027 with the objective of 80% individual cells compared to 39% currently. Insufficient, considers the UFAP-UNSa which speaks of “sword in the water”.
This is the sixth consecutive month that the prison population has increased. In one year, the number of prisoners increased by 6.1%. Prison staff denounce the lack of staff and prison overcrowding. The UFAP-UNSa justice estimates that there is a shortage of 200 supervisors in Occitania and is outraged by the increase in attacks against supervisors.
