Inflation sets in in France and exceeds forecasts. INSEE estimates that it will reach 6.8% in one year in September. The most modest French people are already depriving themselves of certain essential products.
Putting fruit and vegetables in your basket is becoming a luxury that low-income households can no longer afford. Consumer prices increased by 0.7% in one month and 5.2% in one year. “We are in a situation of inflation which is quite rare, since we have very high inflation on basic food products, in particular [les pâtes]“, explains Grégoire Mialet, specialized in the analysis of consumer trends.
The fall in consumption is particularly significant in traditional markets, where it reached -11.8% in volume. Some foods are considered by some French people as expensive and non-essential. This is the case for charcuterie, at 33%, or cheese, at 26%. Conversely, the desire of the French to stock up in anticipation of continued inflation has increased the purchase of mustard (+ 14% compared to 2021) or ready meals (+ 4% over one month).
