Solution to illegal housing rentals

The fire in the heritage building in Old Montreal shows us the negligence of the municipal and provincial governments as to the means of enforcing the law concerning the transformation of rental housing into housing rented for

tourist. We see that each order of government passes the buck to the other. We know the legendary slowness of governments to find solutions to their administrative problems. So why not use insurance companies to deny coverage to customers who choose to rent accommodation(s) for tourist purposes, unless they present proof of possession of the municipal license and registration with Revenue Quebec?

The protection would be conditional on the visit of a representative of the insurance company within 30 days, which would allow the latter to verify that the building meets the other security conditions that a tourist-type building requires.

In turn, this recourse to insurance companies would allow the two levels of government to obtain a relatively quick solution. The government of Quebec can quickly vote on an amendment to the current laws governing this type of commercial activity.
