A man fatally stabbed three people in Solingen on the evening of Saturday, August 24, to “avenge the Muslims of Palestine and elsewhere.” The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.
The suspect surrendered and was remanded in custody. The main suspect in the stabbing attack in Solingen, Germany, is suspected of belonging to a terrorist group. Issa Al Hasan, 26, a Syrian refugee, had been legally residing in the country since 2023. On Saturday, August 24, at around 11 p.m., he surrendered to the police. His attack was claimed by the terrorist group Islamic State for “avenge the Muslims of Palestine.” The suspect allegedly approached the police in the street and said: “I am the one you are looking for.”
Issa Al Hassan was arrested next to the asylum seekers’ shelter where he was staying, just 300 metres from the Fornhof in Solingen city centre where the attack took place. It was the end of twenty-six hours of anguish for the residents. During searches, investigators had already found a blood-stained jacket with his identity papers, and a knife in a bin. The German president promised to toughen measures to combat terrorism. Four seriously injured people are still in hospital.
