“I propose that we draft a Joint Declaration to denounce the repression and violence of the regime, to demand the withdrawal of the Islamic Republic of Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and to demand an end to all gender-based discrimination and violence,” wrote Ms.me Ghazal in a letter sent this morning to all women elected on October 3.
She wants this statement to be sent to “the United Nations, the Iranian President and the Prime Minister of Canada”.
In this message, she recalls that “since the death of Mahsa Amini last September when she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran, on the pretext that she did not wear the Islamic veil in accordance with the dress code imposed on women” , demonstrations broke out all over Iran.
“So that the tragic death of this 22-year-old young woman and hundreds of others since the start of the crackdown, especially teenagers, is not in vain, we have a moral duty to act,” she wrote. .
Do not underestimate gestures
“Iranians need more action to put pressure on the regime. It takes pressure from the international. […] Every gesture counts. We must not underestimate any gesture, ”explained the member for Mercier in an interview.
She wants a “transpartisan meeting” between women parliamentarians. “What I am offering them is a joint, written declaration. But there could be other suggestions from elected officials. It will depend on this meeting, ”she adds.
She said she was extremely touched by the courage of young Iranian schoolgirls “who take off their veils” and participate in demonstrations at the risk of their lives.
Mme Ghazal will participate in a march in solidarity with Iranian women on Saturday.
