All good things come to an end. And unfortunately, Sochaux’s fine series of victories came to an end this Saturday evening in Valenciennes at the end of the 10th day of Ligue 2. No 7th success in a row but a 2 to 1 defeat more than avoidable and which ejects the FCSM from 1st place, now occupied by Amiens. The Sochaliens, 2nd, could even pass 3rd in the event of success from Bordeaux to Laval on Monday.
Still running after the score
Once again, Sochaux misses the start of the match, and is logically punished on a penalty, certainly generous, transformed by Joffrey Cuffaut at the 25th minute. Aldo Kalulu equalizes however very quickly (32nd) with a nice cross shot, magnificently launched by Tony Mauricio, but the Yellow and Blue were again trapped in the second half on a bad defensive withdrawal, sanctioned by a nice lob from Diliberto ( 58th). Gaétan Weissbeck’s teammates will then lay siege to the northern defense with the remarkable entry of Tebily, multiplying the opportunities, but for lack of accuracy (De Sa, Doumbia), or by falling on a very inspired goalkeeper, nothing helps and the defeat is consummated.
Olivier Guégan “We have 21 shots and 60% possession away from home, it’s frustrating”
Frustrating, frustrating and more frustrating
Obviously, this defeat has a bitter taste in the ranks of Sochaux, especially for the coach.
Olivier Guégan’s reaction: “It’s frustrating because we didn’t play a better team than us but more effective. We made 21 shots, we have 60% possession, a lot of badly played situations in the offensive field, and behind we make errors of concentration. We had room to do much better, we showed some interesting things at times but not enough about the continuity of the match and we were simply not rewarded. This is the story of this match, we will digest it, see what went wrong, I have my little idea, and it’s good that we’re replaying a big game against Saint-Etienne to get back on track.”
Same feeling for captain Gaétan Weissbeck: “In the game, we have the ball all the time, we were dangerous, we had chances, but we came across a great goalkeeper. This is a good reminder to see that nothing is certain, that we must not relax in this championship, I think it’s just an accident, we mustn’t throw everything away tonight, but we really have to erase these early matches.”
Against Saint-Etienne, Monday October 10 at 8:45 p.m., Sochaux will have the opportunity to get back in the saddle. A series ends in the North, the Yellow and Blue to start again against the Greens.
