(Toronto) Drake will be named songwriter of the year at the upcoming SOCAN awards, which will be held September 24 in Toronto.
The Toronto hip-hop star will be recognized for “his undeniable influence on the music industry and his prowess as a songwriter,” SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) said in a news release Tuesday.
Other winners include Toronto rapper K’naan, who will receive an award recognizing the global resonance of his 2009 smash hit. Wavin’Flagand Hamilton-based rock group Arkells, who will be recognized for “their exceptional impact on the Canadian musical landscape.”
The evening will feature live performances by Jade Eagleson, LU KALA, Nemahsis, Noeline Hofmann, Sebastian Gaskin and Strings From Paris, as well as a special performance by Wavin’Flag.
