SOCAN Awards | La Zarra named Francophone Discovery of the Year

The 33e edition of the SOCAN Awards will honor the achievements of Canada’s top songwriters, composers and music publishers on October 17 in Toronto. Montreal singer La Zarra will receive the Francophone discovery of the year award.

Under the theme Life Is a Highwaythe gala will also honor Tom Cochrane, Drake, Noah “40” Shebib, The Weeknd, Keith Power, Tate McCrae, among others.

Quebec singer La Zarra will perform during the awards evening, during which she will be awarded the prize for Francophone discovery of the year. Nonso Amadi, Drezus, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and several others will also take the stage for a performance.

For the first time, the Vince-Fontaine Prize for Indigenous Music will be awarded. Named in honor of the late songwriter and co-founder of the duo Eagle & Hawk, the award will be presented to hip-hop group Snotty Nose Rez Kids, as well as rapper Drezus.

Tom Cochrane, whose song Life Is a Highway inspires the theme of the year, will receive the cultural footprint award for this now classic piece. Rapper Drake is the recipient of the Songwriter of the Year award, Performer category.

The French counterpart to the ceremony, the SOCAN Gala, will take place on May 7, 2023 in Montreal.
