Soaring Success for Union’s Women’s Soccer Team Director Zietz: “I definitely have to remind myself of this at times”

The Union Berlin women’s team has quickly adapted to the 2nd Bundesliga, currently sitting third in the table after five wins in eight games. Managing director Jennifer Zietz is optimistic about achieving promotion to the top flight, noting the investment in training facilities and player salaries that match Bundesliga standards. The team is focused on maintaining a balance between ambition and enjoyment while navigating the competitive landscape of women’s football.

The Union Berlin women’s football team has quickly made its mark in the 2nd Bundesliga, positioning itself for a shot at promotion to the top tier. Managing Director Jennifer Zietz is enthusiastic about the team’s progress.

Zietz: Looking at the table certainly brings a sense of pride. We’ve only had one loss and two draws in our first eight games, and I’m pleased with our current third-place standing. It feels surreal at times.

Did you have ambitions of making a push for Bundesliga promotion in your inaugural season in the second division?
Zietz: Yes, we were optimistic about that possibility. Our squad from last season laid a solid foundation, and with the new players we’ve brought in, we’ve had a strong start. However, the level of competition in the 2nd division is intense. Teams are equally motivated to achieve their promotion goals, which means we must perform at our absolute best.

The professionalization of the women’s team has been ongoing for several years. What structural improvements have facilitated your promotion aspirations?
Zietz: A major milestone is our move to a larger stadium, where we average about 5,000 attendees and have sold 2,500 season tickets. This level of support is noteworthy. We’ve also improved our training facilities, including heated grass pitches for winter practice, which enhances our preparation and offers the players the best conditions to excel.

Would you say the environment now resembles that of a Bundesliga club? Does this extend to player salaries?
Zietz: I believe so. We’ve recently made significant investments in various aspects, including player salaries. The club now functions at a level comparable to Bundesliga clubs regarding training conditions, spectator engagement, and overall market reach. However, one key area still requires attention…

What is that area?
Zietz: To compete effectively, we need a complete coaching staff, a committed team, and players with Bundesliga-level qualities. We’re steadily improving in those areas, but it’s essential to grow at a manageable pace. Adapting to a professional environment and performing in front of crowds can be daunting, and I think our players experienced some nervousness as they adjusted.

Is there significant pressure to achieve promotion this season? Is that an explicitly stated goal?
Zietz: While promotion isn’t our official target, it’s a fantastic opportunity we must seize. With three out of 14 teams advancing this season, we aim to capitalize on our momentum from the regional league. We started strong and want to maximize this chance, but it’s vital to remain calm and focused.

Has the prospect of promotion influenced the atmosphere within the club?
Zietz: Absolutely. The club is investing with clear goals in mind, and achieving success is now a shared priority. There’s a heightened demand for excellence in areas like sponsorship and compliance. However, we maintain open and equal communication among all parties involved.

And how about on-field dynamics?
Zietz: We’re focused on clear objectives, which requires a level of intensity that fosters growth. High-level athletes are dedicated, and we expect the same from ourselves. The second division can be challenging, and as we potentially move into the Bundesliga, we need to be prepared for an even tougher environment. Our players are determined to rise to the occasion.

Transitioning to Stadion an der Alten Försterei marks a significant step forward for the women’s team, potentially attracting new fans from diverse demographics. By Jakob Lobach

How can you maintain a sense of ease despite the pressures of performance?
Zietz: We must manage expectations without becoming overwhelmed. It’s important to view our situation positively. Female athletes often hold themselves to high standards, so finding balance is essential. We need to address issues constructively without being overly critical. Our team demonstrated this well after the setback against Frankfurt by bouncing back with a decisive 5:0 victory over Ingolstadt.

With the latest win, your team sits just two points from the league leaders, Nuremberg, and five points ahead of the fourth-place team. What are the chances of securing promotion to the Bundesliga?
Zietz: I’m very optimistic. Although we have many more matches ahead, I believe strongly in our current trajectory and team development. We simply must continue our momentum after the international break, and I’m confident we remain on track.

Thank you for your insights.
