A snowstorm will start in the greater Montreal area in the middle of the evening on Sunday, and at the end of the evening in Center-du-Québec. Areas of eastern Quebec will receive precipitation starting Monday morning.

The snow “will intensify quite quickly from the moment it starts.” Already [lundi] In the morning, in the greater Montreal area, we will have 10 to 15 centimeters of snow, ”explains Jean-Philippe Bégin, meteorologist at Environment Canada.

Between 15 and 20 centimeters of snow is expected in most other areas of the province.

During the day on Monday, the snow will turn to freezing rain, then to rain, in all regions.

Environment Canada therefore anticipates a difficult rush hour Monday morning, and calls on drivers to adapt their driving to weather conditions. Blowing snow is also anticipated in the Saguenay region.

“For areas north of the St. Lawrence River [Lanaudière, la Mauricie, Québec et les Laurentides], the period of freezing rain will be longer. Whereas the further south of the St. Lawrence River, towards the American border, the less this period of freezing rain will be prolonged, ”emphasizes Jean-Philippe Bégin.

From Monday evening, the cold front associated with the storm will sweep across all areas of southern Quebec. “Behind the cold front, the winds will intensify, and this is where we will have gusts of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour,” said the meteorologist. Temperatures will also drop below zero overnight Monday through Tuesday.

“The winds will slowly weaken, but we will still have gusts of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour very early in the morning. [mardi] », Warns Mr. Bégin. The storm will be a thing of the past on Tuesday, however.

A system from the Great Lakes

The system causing the storm originated in Lake Superior. It will then “energize” while passing over the Great Lakes. “It is a pool of energy that will help increase the humidity that will be available for the storm”, since the water in the lakes is not frozen, explains Jean-Philippe Bégin. The system will then move towards the province of Quebec, from west to east.
