Snowmobile collides with moose

A collision with a moose following an attempt to rescue a snowmobiler resulted in the death of a 33-year-old woman.

On Christmas Eve, the emergency services went about twenty kilometers from Chemin du Lac-Mathieu in the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean.

According to information from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the 33-year-old woman lost control of her snowmobile before hitting a gazebo.

Two men close to the victim tried to rescue her by pulling her out of her awkward position. They then placed her in a sled which they towed using a second snowmobile. One of the men stayed with her in the sleigh.

This snowmobile then struck a moose crossing its path. The victim of the first swerve was thrown from the sled, as was the driver. She and the two men were taken to a hospital.

The 33-year-old woman died of her injuries in hospital. The two men who tried to rescue her suffered serious injuries which, however, are not life threatening.

An accident scene reconstruction investigator was dispatched to the scene to understand and shed light on the causes and circumstances surrounding the collision.
