Snowboarding | Sébastien Toutant finishes fifth at Mammoth

After a good descent in qualifying, Sébastien Toutant was unable to repeat his exploits in the final at the Freestyle Downhill (slopestyle) World Cup in Mammoth, California.

The Quebec snowboarder, fourth in qualifying, first obtained a score of 31.14 on his first attempt in the final, before recovering in good manners on his second attempt with 69.18 points. This mark was not enough to make his way on the podium, however, and he finished in fifth place.

Toutant was trying to keep the momentum going after taking gold at the World Cup in Calgary last week.

American Redmond Gerard was also brilliant in his second run of the final on Saturday, amassing 82.88 points and the gold medal. The last to set off, the Dutchman Niek van der Velden missed a jump at the start of the course and was unable to dislodge Gerard. He collected the silver medal with 76.56 points.

Tiarn Collins of New Zealand completes the podium with 73.44 points. Albertan Darcy Sharpe was the best Canadian of the day with fourth place and 69.60 points.

The acrobatic downhill event was originally scheduled for Friday, but strong Mammoth winds forced organizers to postpone the event until Saturday.

Also in the competition, Francis Jobin finished at 35e rank. His path stopped during qualifying where he accumulated 34.5 points.

The next Freestyle Downhill World Cup will take place in Laax, Switzerland, January 13-16.
