Snowboard World Championships | Arnaud Gaudet wins bronze at Bakouriani

(Bak’Uriani) Quebec’s Arnaud Gaudet won the bronze medal in parallel slalom on Tuesday at the World Snowboard Championships in Bakouriani, Georgia.


Gaudet, who is from Montcalm, defeated Austrian Fabian Obmann in the small final. His compatriots Andreas Prommegger and Arvid Auner climbed on the first two steps of the podium, in order.

It was the first career podium for Gaudet, 22, at the Snowboard Worlds. He had also finished in 26e place in parallel slalom at the Beijing Olympics last winter.

The Canadian Darren Gardner was held back in the round of 16, while his compatriot Jamie Behan could not cross the qualifications.

On the women’s side, Julie Zogg and Ladina Jenny completed a double in parallel slalom for Switzerland. The podium was completed by Austrian Sabine Schöffmann.

Maple leaf representative Abby van Groningen was eliminated in qualifying.

In jumps, Quebecer Marion Thénault qualified for the finals after obtaining a score of 96.93 points in qualifications.

Thénault, from Sherbrooke, performed a backward jump with two full twists. Only the Australian Danielle Scott surpassed Thénault, by virtue of a mark of 99.40 points.

The top 12 jumpers qualified for the finals, which will take place on Wednesday.
