Upcoming air displays by the Snowbirds, the Canadian Forces aerobatic team, will likely have to be cancelled. A technical problem affecting the adjustment device that allows the opening of the parachutes prevents the crew from taking to the air.
The Snowbird team was scheduled to fly over Dieppe-Moncton-Riverview, New Brunswick on June 29 and then June 1.er July, in Ottawa, on the occasion of Canada Day. Flypasts were then scheduled for July 9 and 10 in Kelowna, British Columbia.
“We are confident that this safety issue will be addressed as we are working with a third party aviation contractor and our own technical and maintenance experts are on board,” Maj. Gen. Eric said on Friday. Kenny, commander of the 1D Canadian Air Division, in a news release.
It was during a routine maintenance operation, on June 19, that technicians discovered the defect in the parachute opening device. As a precaution, the parachutes currently used by the crew of the CT-114 Tutor aircraft will be retested, to ensure that their activation is set correctly should an emergency arise.
