Snow causes hassle, but no “major accidents” so far in Montreal

The snow that fell in Greater Montreal on Sunday caused a few accidents on the region’s various highways, but there is “nothing major” for the moment, indicates the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

“There were road trips or material collisions with really minor injuries. I have nothing serious at the moment,” said Marc Tessier, spokesperson for the SQ. He specifies that the accidents listed occurred almost everywhere on the highways of the metropolitan region, such as the 40, the 20 or the 15.

Road conditions are slippery due to the snow that has been falling in Greater Montreal since last night. It will continue to fall until the evening, when 5 to 15 centimeters are expected in total. The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility also reported on Sunday morning sections of Montreal where visibility was reduced and the roads were snow-covered, particularly on the roads in the South-West, on Nuns’ Island, as well as in the Highway 25 sector.

CAA-Quebec claims to have done “slightly more” interventions on Saturday than usual on winter days. “We provided around 1,800 services on Saturday. Normal should have been around 1300 to 1500 services. This Sunday we are planning 1,500 services,” reports the director of public affairs, Nicolas Ryan.

This weekend, the organization provided assistance to members for getting stuck, but especially for requests for boosting, he continues. “Batteries lose power in summer because of the heat. So it’s on cold winter days that we realize that they no longer work. One of the tips we give is to have the battery checked when we change our tires for the winter. »

David Marcille, who is also a spokesperson for CAA-Quebec, reminds us of the good practices to adopt when driving during the cold season. “You have to extend the distances between cars and take the time to really clear snow from your vehicle firstly to avoid fines and secondly for visibility issues. »

Motorists who have the luxury and time to postpone their trips planned for today should consider it, says Mr. Marcille. “It’s better for our safety and that of others. »

Advice that will be relevant for next week, when a snowstorm will hit all of Quebec between Tuesday and Thursday morning, according to Environment Canada forecasts.
