SNCF posts profits of 1.3 billion euros in 2023, down significantly compared to 2022. On closer inspection, the company discreetly inflates its prices. Investigation.

While the SNCF had promised to limit price increases, they increased significantly on certain lines. With the advantage card, prices are certainly capped, but the ceiling has exploded: 39 euros maximum for a Paris-Rennes in February 2023, 49 euros in September 2023, and 69 euros today. SNCF has discreetly changed its calculation method. To previously set the ceiling price for a journey, it was based on the shortest journey time. Now she looks at the average time.

“Commuters” in the viewfinder?

Five TGV lines saw their ceiling prices soar in January 2024. “The majority of holders of the travel advantage card at a price lower than the capped price”, comments for its part SNCF Voyageurs. To maximize its profits, the company also takes money from subscribers. For the 3,000 people from Tours who commute to Paris every week, the subscription continues to increase: 15% in one year. “We want to separate ourselves from commuters, since for the SNCF this type of subscription is not interesting, they prefer to have customers who buy tickets directly in full”, analyzes one of them. Increases that raise questions, while the company continues to make profits.
