SNC-Lavalin will be the prime contractor for the Champlain Hudson Power Express project, this Hydro-Quebec electricity transmission line which will carry 10.4 terawatt hours from Quebec facilities to New York City for 25 years.
The Montreal-based engineering company will thus ensure the technical supervision and coordination of the design of the cables to transmit hydroelectricity in high voltage direct current (HVDC) and of the converter station.
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
The project consists of an underground transmission line of approximately 545 km, more than half of which will be installed under water and the rest underground. Eventually, it should supply nearly 20% of the electricity needs of the American metropolis.
The transmission line will start at the Hertel station in Quebec, cross into the United States under Lake Champlain, then travel south to connect to a converter station in Astoria, Queens, New York.
Further details will follow.
