In Portugal, the fires that ravaged 100,000 hectares are now under control. While the fires have caused a record carbon emissions for a month of September, plumes of smoke could be visible in France during the weekend.
Thousands of hectares of forest have burned in northern Portugal, during nearly six days of fires. Thick smoke still lingers. In total, the country has already emitted nearly 2.5 million tons of carbon with these fires, the highest amount for a month of September in 22 years, the date when measurements began.
The smoke is now rising to the north of Portugal. A thick fog is covering the region of Galicia (Spain) on Friday, September 20. The smoke is heading towards France today. “Today, it is mainly over Aquitaine, and in the coming hours, this plume of smoke will gradually rise over all the regions of the West,” explains Ludovic Lagrange, forecaster at Weather Solutions. This air is loaded with fine particles, which are harmful to the respiratory tract.
