Smog warning for Montreal

(Montreal) Environment Canada issued a smog warning for the greater Montreal area on Monday evening.

In its advisory, the federal agency explained that high concentrations of pollutants are expected until Tuesday morning, which will lead to poor air quality.

The warning covers the island of Montreal as well as its northern and southern crowns. Municipalities such as Laval, Longueuil, Saint-Hyacinthe, Sorel-Tracy, Saint-Jérôme and Mirabel are therefore affected.

According to the federal agency, “wood heating is the main source of fine particles that contribute to smog in winter.”

“This is the activity that generates the greatest number of these particles, ahead of industrial activity and transportation,” Environment Canada indicated in its warning.

Smog especially affects asthmatic children and people with respiratory or heart diseases, the agency noted.
