He spoke for the first time on video since the attack of which he was the victim. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, seriously injured by gunfire in mid-May, said he was ready to resume his activities in a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday June 5. “If everything goes as planned, I will gradually be able to return to work around June and July”he clarified.
The leader was hit by four bullets fired at close range, notably in the abdomen, on May 15. The attack took place while he was greeting his supporters after a government meeting in the town of Handlova. The head of government underwent two long surgical procedures. He remained convalescing before being transferred home to continue his home care on May 31.
The suspect identified by Slovak media, poet Juraj Cintula, 71, was charged with attempted premeditated murder and placed in pre-trial detention. Slovakia’s prime minister said he forgave the shooter. “I have no hatred towards the stranger who shot mesaid Robert Fico. I let him think about what he did and why he did it, in his own head.”. His attacker, he adds, “was only the messenger of evil and political hatred that the frustrated and politically unsuccessful opposition developed in Slovakia.”
