Slimming cure for the STM, which eliminates 230 positions

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announced Thursday the abolition of 230 positions and a reduction in the goods budget in order to make up for a shortfall of $36 million. The organization, however, assures that this slimming treatment will not have an impact on the services in its network.

In its last budget, the STM was able to generate savings of $50 million. But it was still struggling with a shortfall of 36 million for 2024.

In November, the STM announced its intention to eliminate 255 positions, or approximately 5% of its workforce, in order to generate savings.

The job cuts will not affect user services, assures the STM.

“Such decisions are always difficult for an organization to make. If we take them, it is not out of joy, but to allow us to maintain our service offering and continue to be present for our customers, where they need it,” commented the general director, Marie-Claude Léonard.

Remember that last October, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Geneviève Guilbault, affirmed that the government of Quebec did not intend to absorb 75% of the deficits of transport companies, as requested by the mayors of the region of Montreal. She then argued that transport companies should tighten their spending before considering service reductions.

Further details will follow.
