“Skull contusion” for Alphonso Davies

This is probably the news Canada coach John Herdman didn’t want to hear. Full-back Alphonso Davies suffered a “brain contusion” on Saturday during Bayern Munich’s game against Borussia Dortmund.

This is the diagnosis made by the Bavarian club on Sunday morning.

“The 21-year-old Canadian is doing well, given the circumstances,” added Bayern, who did not, however, give any indication as to a time frame for a return to play.

Davies was kicked in the face by England’s Jude Bellingham at the very end of the first half. The Canadian talisman had to leave the meeting escorted by medical personnel.

Canada will be competing at the World Cup for the first time in 36 years in about six weeks.

Although the Canadians did well in the absence of Alphonso Davies in the last qualifying games, an absence of the best player in John Herdman’s squad would be catastrophic.
