Sweden’s Sandra Naeslund won gold and Germany’s Daniela Maier completed the podium.

The Swiss Fanny Smith finished at the foot of the podium after a controversy. She was the third skier to cross the finish line, but was disqualified for contact with Maier.

The other three Canadians competing in the event competed in the small final.

Quebecer Brittany Phelan won this race to get the 5and rank. Her compatriots Courtney Hoffos Hannah Schmidt followed respectively at 6and and 7and rung.

Phelan missed the final by 0.03 seconds as on the final descent Smith lost control of his skis and clipped the Mont-Tremblant native, preventing him from combing her at the very end.

Thompson won the gold medal in this event at the 2014 Sochi Games. The PyeongChang Games were more disappointing for the British Columbian, when she had to settle for 17and position.

At the PyeongChang Games, Kelsey Serwa and Phelan gave Canada a double, which had won every Olympic final since ski cross entered the Olympic program in 2010.
