The day after her silver medal at the Ski Cross World Cup in Val Thorens (France), Brittany Phelan once again made her way to the grand final where she finished fourth on Sunday.
The Mont-Tremblant skier didn’t have a great start as she was side by side with compatriot Marielle Thompson and Swiss Fanny Smith. Saturday’s gold medalist Sandra Naeslund of Sweden was already in the lead at the time.
Smith finished second in the third of the course with Thompson and Phelan behind her. The last overhanging section tightened the gaps, except Naeslund was not worried about securing a second win in two days ahead of Smith and Thompson.
Although she missed the podium, the reigning Olympic vice-champion was not disappointed with her day, which was contested under bright sunshine, unlike on Saturday.
“I’m really happy to be in the grand final once again and to have this consistency. My skiing and my approach to racing are going very well and I’m looking forward to improve some things and stay focused on my skiing, ”the 30-year-old skier told Sportcom.
Hannah Schmidt (Mont-Tremblant) stopped in the quarterfinals and placed 11e rank.
Reece Howden was the country’s top representative in the men’s competition with a seventh place finish. Jared Schmidt (Mont-Tremblant) finished 29e and Chris Del Bosco (Montreal) 33e.
The skiers will travel to Arosa, Switzerland, for a new stop on the World Cup circuit which will get underway on Monday with the presentation of qualifying.
“Every race is different and I can’t wait to experience this new course to give everything I have on every downhill,” concluded Phelan.
