Six years ago, the United Kingdom declared itself in favor of leaving the European Union. Thursday, June 23, the country’s economy does not take off.
On June 23, 2016, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson succeeded in achieving his goal: the yes in favor of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union won with more than 17 million votes. A Brexit advocate, he had campaigned by appealing to Tories, the lower middle classes and minorities. The process then began and on January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom officially left the European Union.
Six years later, the pound has weakened against the euro and prices have risen more than 9% year on year. The UK economy is struggling to take off. There are fewer imports and exports with the European Union due to friction at customs and complicated and costly administrative procedures. Boris Johnson had promised to be intractable on migration policy but his government’s figures reflect an increase in legal immigration. If the country’s economy has not collapsed, the United Kingdom has still not benefited from its exit from the EU.
