The story of Chahinez Daoud, mother of three children burned alive in the street by her ex-husband in May 2021 in Mérignac, is a symbol of violence against women. Tuesday January 4, eight police officers are heard for failure in the follow-up of this case.

Chahinez Daoud, 31, is the symbol both of violence against women and of police and judicial failures. On May 4, 2021, while this mother of three was in the process of divorce, her ex-husband killed her in the middle of the street in Mérignac (Gironde). The investigation then shows a series of dysfunctions: Chahinez Daoud had filed a complaint several times against her husband, who was however never worried. Six Bordeaux police officers are referred to disciplinary councils, in particular for negligence and lack of discernment.

The official who took up the mother’s complaint was dismissed for having underestimated the seriousness of the facts. The family lawyer hopes that such tragedies will never happen again. “The state of mind of my clients today is not to want sanctions at all costs, it is rather that we shed light on the various breaches, their causes, their origins”, he reports. The disciplinary councils will issue an opinion on Tuesday, January 4, but the final decision rests in the hands of the Minister of the Interior.
