Fines continue to fall on reveler passengers on Sunwing’s December 30 flight to Cancun. Six other fines have been handed out, Transport Canada said on Monday, which is already warning that “more are coming”.
The fines announced Monday were imposed on a passenger who did not wear a face covering and five others who were not vaccinated, which is required to board a plane departing from Canada.
These fines can reach $5,000.
The federal ministry, however, did not indicate how the unvaccinated passengers were able to board the aircraft.
During this flight, the young revelers had filmed themselves inside the plane and some of their videos circulated widely on social networks: images appeared to show young passengers not wearing masks, singing and dancing in the aisle and on the seats, without distancing. In one, a large bottle of vodka appears to be passed among passengers and later a woman appears to be smoking an e-cigarette on the plane.
Transport Canada had cracked down for the first time at the beginning of March, with a series of six fines, which currently brings the total to 12.
The federal ministry warns now that these fines will not be the last.
They are in addition to the 21 “notices of non-compliance” which were distributed in January by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to some of the passengers on this flight, for non-compliance with a requirement prescribed by the Quarantine Act.
