Six injured by gunshots in New York subway

Six people were injured by bullets, one of whom is in “critical” condition, after gunfire on a New York subway platform, firefighters in the American megacity announced.

According to local media, one or two shooters opened fire late in the afternoon on passengers who were waiting for the subway on the platform at a station in the New York borough of the Bronx.

At Mount Eden Avenue station, the subway is overhead and television footage filmed by drone showed the train stopped and plainclothes police and investigators busy on the platform.

Six people were injured, one in “critical condition”, four with “serious injuries” and another “slightly injured”, a spokesperson for the New York Fire Department (FDNY) told AFP by email.

The six victims were transported to hospitals around this district in the north of the megacity, the most disadvantaged in the city of 8.5 million people.

Citing the city police (NYPD), local media reported that one person died of their injuries in hospital, but this has not been confirmed.

Crime and particularly homicides by firearms have been declining in New York since 2022-2023, after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the carrying of weapons in public is strictly regulated there, compared to other cities and states in the United States.
