Six people, including the 73-year-old suspect, died after a shooting at a condominium building in Vaughan, Ont., on Sunday evening. York Regional Police, north of Toronto, were called to the scene at 7:20 p.m. The male suspect was later shot dead by officers.
Police have so far released little information about the victims or the suspect. On Monday morning, the Special Investigations Unit — Ontario’s equivalent of the Office of Independent Investigations — said it was investigating the death of a 73-year-old man in the same building on Jane Street at the intersection of Rutherford Road. Six members of the unit are currently investigating the interaction with the police.
The shooter had a sixth victim, but this one survived the shots. Some of the other owners have already been able to find their homes. In an interview with television networks on Sunday evening, a York Regional Police officer said police services do not yet know if the suspect knows his victims. These were in different units of the building.
The scene was “horrible” according to another agent interviewed by the media. “We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families,” said Chief of Police Jim MacSween. The safety of the population is no longer in danger, he added.
