(Toronto) Sisters Leylah and Bianca Fernandez caused a surprise in the first round of doubles at the National Bank Open on Tuesday in Toronto.
The Canadian pair defeated Dutchwoman Demi Schuurs and Brazilian Luisa Stefani, who were seeded fifth in the competition, in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The Fernandez sisters hit 70% of their first serves and won 71% of the points on them.
In addition to serving well, the two Quebecers broke their opponents six times. They were broken four times.
In the second round, the Fernandez sisters will face Americans Catherine Harrison and Ashlyn Krueger. The latter defeated the pair of Great Britain’s Harriet Dart and Denmark’s Clara Tauson 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.
