Singer, comedian and former senator Jean Lapointe has died

Jean Lapointe, former senator and entertainment legend, died Friday at age 86.

The ex-Jérolas, who had significant alcohol problems, was also famous for his commitment to the fight against addictions. In 1982, he established the therapy center and foundation that bear his name today. It is also the Maison Jean-Lapointe which confirmed his death on Friday, when we knew his declining health in recent months.

His commitment had earned him the appointment of senator by Jean Chrétien, an experience he ultimately did not appreciate. In one of his last interviews given to Radio-Canada, this former Liberal even admitted to hoping for the advent of a sovereign Quebec.

Actor, comedian, singer, politician, Jean Lapointe is survived by seven children, including host Jean-Marie Lapointe and Anne Elizabeth Lapointe, now general manager of the house founded by his father.
