He was an unclassifiable singer, in love with words, women and freedom. Belgian artist Arno died on Saturday April 23 at the age of 72, after two years of battling pancreatic cancer. With an offbeat cover of the title Girls by the seaby his compatriot Salvatore Adamo, he made a name for himself but he managed to conquer a wider audience with songs like My mother’s eyes.

Arno often mixed styles and never stopped telling his stories, confiding in particular on his heartache. “It’s my therapy. There are people who play sports then I do the scene”, he confided in July 2002. Brilliant lyricist and hard worker, he has written more than a thousand titles in English, French and even Flemish. He leaves behind him an immense musical heritage with about fifteen albums. During his last shows, the singer often mentioned his state of health.
