It was in front of several dozen colleagues and special guests that Paul Arcand offered the very latest edition of Since you have to get upthe most listened to morning show in the country.
The man nicknamed “the king of the airwaves” was entitled to a deluge of tributes. Facing his colleague Alain Crête, who took on the role of host for this special program on 98.5, he received these testimonies with great humility and emotion.
There was an atmosphere of frank camaraderie in the large room of Cogeco which had been transformed into a giant studio.
Paul Arcand is leaving daily hosting after 34 years at the helm of a morning show, including 20 years at 98.5.
As listeners quickly discovered, Mr. Arcand’s last broadcast on the show was Thursday. Friday, it was time for a retrospective, anecdotes and, of course, tributes.
Current and former collaborators and members of the public took turns at the microphone to talk about their experiences with Paul Arcand. Some thanked him for helping them progress in their journey, while others outright admitted to being terrified at the idea of speaking alongside him.
From the first minutes of the show, around 5:30 a.m., Paul Arcand wanted to make things clear: “I haven’t changed my mind, it’s the last one,” he said. he decided. And a few minutes before the end of the show, four and a half hours later, nothing had changed.
But the departure will not be smooth, he admitted, when he took a long moment to address his listeners.
“Am I going to be bored?” Obviously I’m going to be bored. I’m going to miss doing radio, that’s for sure, being there every morning, having this routine, having this direct, privileged contact with listeners,” he said. .
Au-delà des innombrables entrevues avec des politiciens et des personnalités publiques, Paul Arcand est surtout fier d’avoir donné une voix aux personnes qui n’en ont pas, d’avoir aidé de nouveaux arrivants à apprendre le français et d’être entré dans le quotidien des auditeurs.
« Je suis partout dans votre vie. Je suis dans votre salon, dans votre auto, dans vos épreuves, et dans les moments de vie qui ont été pour vous de merveilleux souvenirs. J’ai l’impression d’être un membre de votre famille. Vous me l’avez dit, vous me l’avez écrit, et ça me touche – vraiment. »
Paul Arcand a aussi remercié son équipe, ainsi que les membres de sa famille, reconnaissant qu’il n’est pas toujours facile d’être « le fils de » ou « le conjoint de ».
« Vous m’avez rendu heureux », a-t-il résumé.
Au fil de l’émission, de nombreux témoignages enregistrés au préalable ont été diffusés. Céline Dion, Guy A. Lepage, Yvon Deschamps et Mikaël Kingsbury ont notamment pris quelques instants pour rendre hommage à un « monument » de la radio. L’animateur a cependant semblé encore plus touché par les témoignages des auditeurs qui ont parlé de l’impact qu’il a eu dans leur vie de tous les jours.
Le premier ministre François Legault lui a aussi offert quelques mots sur les réseaux sociaux : « La fin d’une époque ! Merci, Paul, pour ta rigueur et pour ta sensibilité. Tu vas nous manquer. »
De l’information… et de l’humour
Malgré le sérieux qu’on lui connaît en entrevue et dans la préparation de son émission, de nombreux collaborateurs ont mis de l’avant le sens de l’humour de Paul Arcand, surtout à l’extérieur des ondes.
Il a lui-même fait dans l’humour dès les premières minutes de sa dernière émission, faisant bien sûr un clin d’œil à l’actualité.
« Je voudrais demander au service des incendies de Montréal de nous laisser terminer l’émission. On respecte les règles de capacité, on n’a aucun chapiteau, alors s’il vous plaît, tout est sous contrôle et tout se passe dans les règles », a-t-il mentionné, faisant référence à un sujet qui a marqué sa dernière semaine à l’animation, à savoir la fermeture des terrasses de certains restaurants pendant la fin de semaine du Grand Prix de Formule 1.

Plus sérieusement, il a ajouté : « Très honnêtement, je n’aime pas ça […] the kind of avalanche of tenderness and affection”, he admitted, admitting that he would have preferred a normal show, with “a good interview that brews”.
Even if he leaves daily entertainment, Paul Arcand is not completely retiring.
Starting next fall, he will collaborate with The Presswhile continuing to offer its famous press review in the form of a podcast available on the 98.5 digital platforms.
It is the journalist and host Patrick Lagacé who will replace him at the helm of the 98.5 morning show at the start of the fall term. The show will be renamed Bored in the morning.
