Sims 4 Guide: Steps to Celebrate a Sim’s Birthday and Age Them Up

In The Sims 4, players guide their Sims through eight life stages, from baby to senior, each phase offering unique experiences and challenges. Celebrating birthdays is essential for marking these transitions, though hosting a party is optional; simply baking a cake allows for aging up. Players can assist younger Sims with blowing out candles, while neglecting to celebrate results in automatic aging and potential sadness for the character.

The Stages of Life in The Sims 4

In The Sims 4, players can navigate through eight distinct life stages, reflecting the various ages of the Sims. A Sim’s journey starts as a baby, confined to a crib until they evolve into a toddler, discovering the use of their limbs. As they progress, they enter the child phase, where they can attend school and acquire numerous skills. Following this, Sims transition into the teenager stage, grappling with puberty and their first wave of emotions.

Once they leave their teenage years behind, Sims become young adults, a pivotal period where they can choose to pursue education, establish a career, or even embark on romantic relationships. As they mature into adults, many begin to contemplate starting a family, although the looming midlife crisis may complicate their aspirations. Ultimately, they reach the senior stage, a time for reflection and relaxation, marking the final chapter of their lives before passing away. However, to fully relish these life experiences, it’s essential to understand how to celebrate a Sim’s birthday…

Celebrating Birthdays in The Sims 4

The Sims 4, you will eventually receive a notice indicating that a household member’s birthday is approaching. To keep track of these special occasions, check your family calendar located at the bottom left of the screen, adjacent to the portraits. If you spot a cake icon on an upcoming date, it signifies a Sim’s birthday. Click on that date to identify whose celebration it is, and if no other plans are scheduled, you can host a birthday party for your Sim.

It’s important to note that throwing a birthday party is not mandatory for a Sim to age up. All you need is a cake, which you can create by using a refrigerator or oven. You can choose any type of cake (chocolate, blue confetti, honey, etc.), but once it’s baked, make sure to place it at the center of a table or countertop for easy access. After that, add candles and invite the birthday Sim to blow out the candles to age up.

For toddlers and infants, have a teenager or adult click on the cake and select the option ‘Help Sim blow out the candles’. The adult will then assist the toddler or infant in blowing out the candles. For babies, simply wait for the birthday notification and click on the baby directly to age them up to the next stage.

Be aware that if you neglect to celebrate your Sim’s birthday, they will age up automatically at the end of the day, resulting in a sad moodlet due to feeling overlooked.
