Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker and Marie Curie are the new faces of the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins. The three historical figures will be on the face side of the coins. Since the changeover to the euro, this is the first time that France has changed the appearance of its coins. “I think it’s excellent, it’s modern”, assures a man. Auschwitz survivor, figure in politics and the fight for women’s rights, Simone Veil will be the face of the 10 cent coins.

“The names of these three women emerged naturally”

Joséphine Baker, first black woman resistance fighter, anti-racist and feminist activist, will appear on the 20 cent coins. Marie Curie, French scientist, twice winner of the Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry, will be on the 50 cent coins. “The name of these three women emerged naturally, given their stature, their place in history, and the symbol they represent”says Marc Schwartz, director of the Monnaie de Paris.
