Identity card, medical assessments, pay slips… Thousands of confidential data from the Cannes hospital (Alpes-Maritimes) were stolen. This information concerns staff and patients. Behind the attack, one of the best-known names in the hacker world: Lockbit, software created by Russian-speaking cybercriminals. They make this program available to hackers who use it to steal or block data. In the event of a successful attack and the ransom paid, they pay 20% to the creators of the software.
An international operation two months ago
Last February, the authorities were convinced that they had put an end to the actions of Lockbit after having managed to infiltrate the network. Two people were arrested and 34 servers dismantled. “The international operation was a pretty severe blow during the first hours. During the next hours, he put his structure back in place, he relaunched cyberattacks with his affiliates”, explains Damien Bancal, specialist in cyber-intelligence. Since its creation, Lockbit has been behind 2,500 cyberattacks worldwide and has collected more than $120 million in ransoms.
