Simona Halep officially challenged her four-year ban for sports doping before the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday.
The court indicated that it had received a formal request to challenge the decision imposed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in September from the holder of two career Grand Slam titles.
The ITIA determined that the 32-year-old “willfully violated anti-doping rules” after failing a drug test during the 2022 U.S. Open and having anomalies in her biological passport.
Halep claims banned substances contaminated her dietary supplements, and she added that she would do “everything in my power to clear my name of these false allegations and return to the field.”
The Romanian rose to world number one in 2017. She won Wimbledon in 2019, after beating the American Serena Williams in the final, and won the French Open in 2018.
The CAS indicated that a committee of judges will be responsible for deciding in this case. There are no timelines for reaching a verdict.
Halep would be 35 years old when her suspension expires, scheduled for early October in 2026.
