He thought he would win last year but the final stage had been fatal to him. Primoz Roglic presented himself again as leader of the general classification at the start of the last round of Paris-Nice, Sunday March 13. And the yellow jersey again almost slipped from his shoulders. Simon Yates (2nd at 47″ at the start) distanced the Slovenian in the ascent of the Col d’Eze to win in Nice. Unfortunately for the Briton, he was unable to create enough of a gap to take the golden tunic.

Imperial in the Col du Turini on Saturday, Primoz Roglic this time cracked and saw his runner-up fly away overall. But he was able to count on Wout Van Aert, his luxury teammate who rode the entire climb to allow his leader to come back to within ten seconds of Simon Yates and not experience further disappointment. Daniel Felipe Martinez (3rd at 1’00 before the first pedal strokes) punctured on the descent of the Côte de Peille, losing all hope even before the last ascent.
