Documentary filmmaker Jean-Philippe Marquis will be at the Cinémathèque this Monday to present his most recent film, Silvicola. The Quebec-born filmmaker, now based in British Columbia, explores the dilemma of forestry workers “who know and love the forest, but destroy it to earn a living,” says Jean-Philippe Marquis.
During her presentation at the Montreal International Documentary Meetings (RIDM), colleague Anne-Frédérique Hébert-Dolbec wrote in The dutylaudatory:
“In this graceful and intimate fresco, Jean-Philippe Marquis conveys the stories of those who, on different scales, participate in the exploitation or preservation of the forests of Western Canada. »
Note that the latter, who produced and directed the documentary, in addition to signing the photo direction, knows the forestry environment well.
Before its programming at the Cinémathèque and the Cinéma Public, where it is currently showing, and its selection at the RIDM, Silvicola was awarded at several festivals, including Planet in Focus, Hot Docs, and the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF).
