Silk Sonic | Fun and funk ★★★ ½

The announcement of the Silk Sonic project bringing together Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak was in itself a small blessing for all those who love these two very talented artists. The meeting of their universes, combined with a revisit of the soul and funk tunes of the 1970s, was the promise of an exhilarating musical moment. An Evening With Silk Sonic perfectly meets our expectations and even manages to surprise us on occasion.

The R & B of the two charismatic accomplices is sulphurous, lively, often very entertaining. We are served half an hour of clever music that honors those the duo took inspiration from – the Motown echo echoes from start to finish.

The excellent extract Leave the Door Open convinced us last spring that this project was a genius idea. It remains the centerpiece of the album. The erotic invitations multiply throughout the record, nothing too surprising since these two are involved.

The duo also allows themselves moments of swagger. After Last Night, along with Thundercat, manages to be as sexy as it is fun. Smokin Out the Window is as tragic as it is amusing (yes, yes!). Then, 777 transports us to an exciting evening at the casino. The cadence Skateboard offers a refrain that we keep in mind for a long time – let’s take the time to quote here the exquisite line ” I can smell your sweet perfume (Hmm, you smell better than a barbecue) “.

The “host” Bootsy Collins (great funk bassist) animates the Evening with Silk Sonic. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak share the half hour of music, sometimes singing a duet on a song and other times grabbing a piece solo. We hope that Silk Sonic is not the business of a single album and that the duo will have a long life.
