Should you keep dead leaves on your lawn?

Once summer is over, the days get shorter, the temperatures drop and the first leaves begin to fall from the trees. But what to do with the leaves on the lawn in your garden? You can leave a few leaves on the lawn to protect it from frost, but be careful all the same. Too many leaves on a lawn could deprive it of light and smother it. Do not hesitate to collect the leaves in several piles in your garden. You can use these leaves to protect your vegetable garden, for example, in winter.

Another possible solution is to make compost. For this, do not hesitate to crush the leaves before putting them in a composter. If you do not have a composter, you can use a plot of your garden to store dead leaves. For faster decomposition of the leaves in your garden, you can alternate a leaf layer of about 30 centimeters and nitrogen-rich organic matter such as roasted horn. Don’t forget to aerate your compost on a regular basis so that it is of better quality.

The leaves can also serve as shelter for many small animals, such as hedgehogs. If you want to make a shelter, you can of course put some leaves in a corner of your garden, preferably sheltered from the wind. Hedgehogs are very fond of these makeshift shelters when winter comes. Many tutorials also exist on the internet to allow you to create more elaborate shelters.

If after all this, you still have a few leaves, do not hesitate to dry them in a shelter. When spring comes, you can use the dried leaves as mulch. This mulch can be placed at the foot of the trees, it will help maintain a good level of humidity as soon as the temperatures rise again.
