The Economic Analysis Council reveals that there are inequalities between the French at the level of inheritance. Journalist Chloé Tixier does the point, Tuesday, December 21, on the measures envisaged which could modify the current taxation.

Should we review the tax on inheritance? The Economic Analysis Council advocates reform of the system. In France, the share of inheritance represents “60% of total wealth. It was only 35% in the 1970s”, recalls journalist Chloé Tixier, on the 19/20 set, Tuesday, December 21. “The average age of heirs has also increased: about 50 years against 30 years in the last century. As a result, according to the authors of the study, it is almost essential today to inherit to gain in standard of living”, she explains.

Not everyone has the chance to inherit, and inequalities are growing between the French. Within the same generation, “Half of individuals will receive less than 70,000 euros in inheritance during their lifetime. The richest 10% will inherit 500,000 euros. And it is even more for 1% of the population, with more than 4.2 million euros of inheritance on average “, underlines the journalist.

Those in charge of the study therefore propose to eliminate certain tax allowances which “allow the richest to pay less tax during an inheritance” or “to add up all the inheritances and gifts that you will receive throughout your life. Concretely, the more inheritance you will receive, the more taxes you will pay”, reports Chloé Tixier.
