European elections: should we introduce a tax for the richest?
(France 2)

At the heart of the European election campaign, certain parties are proposing to create a European tax for the richest. Could it see the light of day?

This is a major debate in the campaign for the European elections on June 9. Some parties would like to tax large fortunes more. Should we create a European tax for the richest? Yes, unanimously argues the left, which is calling for a new tax on very high wealth across the 27 countries of the European Union. Raphaël Glucksmann (Socialist Party – Public Square) launched a petition in Europe in favor of this tax. Taxing the ultra-rich could bring in billions, according to La France insoumise.

The right refuses any new tax

The presidential camp refuses this European tax. The Renaissance party fears a flight of multimillionaires from Europe. The right rejects any new tax, as does the far right. According to the National Rally and Reconquest!, taxation must remain an exclusive jurisdiction of the States. This new tax is far from being adopted, because the tax rules require unanimity. Several countries, including France, are opposed to it.
