The Covid-19 contamination figures are clearly on the rise again: from 20,000 cases per day on average last week, to 40,000 cases on Thursday June 9. Should we fear this rebound?

In a Parisian pharmacy, tests against Covid-19 have recently become more frequent. “For the past two weeks, there has been an increase in positive cases. We started from 8-10%, and there, currently, we are going up to around 20-25% of positive cases“, indicates, Saturday, June 11, Jordan Bourguia, sampler at the Edgar Quinet pharmacy, in Paris.

After an uninterrupted decline of three months, contaminations resume. In seven days, 40,151 new cases were listed, an increase of 58% in positive cases. 2,364 people were hospitalized for Covid-19 in one week, marking a slight increase. Professor Karine Lacombe, infectiologist and head of the infectious diseases department at Saint-Antoine Hospital (AP-HP), calls for surveillance and recalls that the hospital is “in tension” because of a “gross lack of staff“.

According to health authorities, the new variants, BA.4 and BA.5, are less dangerous – except for people who are immunocompromised or have chronic diseases.
