I really want to get a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta. I’m hesitating between a Comfortline and Highline version. Ideally, I would opt for a manual transmission version. I owned a 2000 Jetta with which I encountered several problems. Should I be worried about the new engine in the 2022 Jetta?

Hello Luke,
This spring, The Car Guide happened to attend the Canadian launch of the 2022 Jetta in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region of Ontario.
For 2022, the Jetta has received some cosmetic upgrades as it hits the seventh-generation halfway mark. As you noted, she is also getting a new mechanic. Its 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine was replaced with a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This was first introduced with the Taos. It is important to note that approximately 85% of the components of the old engine are in the new one. Although we don’t have a crystal ball in front of us, we don’t foresee catastrophic reliability with the model.
For your information, the 1.5L engine develops 158 horsepower, 11 more than the old one, as well as 184 lb-ft of torque. Despite this power gain, the fuel consumption announced by Natural Resources Canada remains the same with the manual transmission, namely 6.9 L/100 km. There is a slight improvement with the automatic transmission.
As for the manual transmission, we’re very happy that Volkswagen continues to offer it with the Jetta. However, it is only available with the Trendline and Comfortline versions. That being said, if you’re willing to shell out nearly $30,000 for a Highline version, we recommend making the jump to a Jetta GLI. For just under $32,000, you’ll end up with one hell of a machine in your hands. Both sporty and civilized, spacious and responsive, it represents more than an excellent compromise. And it is offered with the manual transmission. Of course, performance enthusiasts will appreciate its 2.0L turbocharged engine that develops 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft.
Think twice.
