Emmanuel Macron suggested that the debate on the duration of school holidays should be reopened. It is an old sea serpent that has been agitating society for more than a century.

It’s a sea serpent that regularly pokes its nose as summer approaches: should summer school holidays be reduced? A divisive subject. “I like school, but I also like having holidays”, explains a young girl interviewed. Two months, eight weeks, sixty days? Is it really endless? In the 19th century, summer lasted six weeks. The period was extended by two weeks after the Great War for children to participate in harvesting and grape-picking. With the Popular Front, it even peaked at ten weeks.

A revived debate

In 1981, the holidays were again shortened to two weeks in September. We have to wait until 2011 for a new project to appear. The President of the Republic has therefore just jumped back into the sea serpent, with at least the whole summer to discuss it on the towels.
