In place for a few years on the shelves, the Nutri-Score encourages manufacturers to put less fat, salt or sugar in their products. While some are still reluctant to indicate it, UFC-Que Choisir asks Europe to make this classification mandatory.

It’s a letter that changes everything: ranked from A to E, the Nutri-Score of products influences consumers who are increasingly concerned about their diet. “We are careful with certain products, such as cereals or cakes”says a consumer. “It forces manufacturers to be careful, to tell themselves that the customer is not going to buy with their eyes closed”says another

The Nutri-Score absent from 40% of food products

The Nutri-Score encourages manufacturers to do better: thus, 62% of sandwich breads and rusks, 49% of cereal bars and 38% of cereals are rated A, B or C. “It is a powerful incentive to put pressure (…), improve quality and reduce fat, salt and sugar levels”, observes Olivier Andrault, food project manager at UFC-Que Choisir. But some manufacturers refuse to comply: the nutri-score is absent from 40% of food products, in particular ice cream, sorbets, sauces and cereal bars – ie very fatty, sweet or salty products.
