An environmental federation is proposing to tax frequent flyers in order to reduce the ever-increasing carbon footprint of the airline industry. A divisive idea.

A tax on each ticket, which increases the further you go and the more often you fly. This is the proposal of the Réseau, Action, Climat federation to reduce emissions from the aviation sector. “It still hurts the wallet and ecologically, I think it’s time we did something”says a passenger waiting for her flight at Roissy.

The “frequent traveler” tax would be progressive: for a first round trip during the year to a distant destination, such as New York (United States), it will be necessary to pay 100 euros. Then 500 euros for the fifth trip. But for a first trip from Paris to Barcelona, the traveler will not have to pay anything. The fifth trip will however be billed 400 euros.

A shocking and necessary measure for the association proposing it, because greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector continue to increase.
