Shot fired in the parking lot of a supermarket in Rennes: what we know

A few hours after firing a shot at a supermarket parking lot in Rennes on Saturday July 30, the author surrendered to the police. This 37-year-old man, resident of the Rennes metropolis, was to be tried in immediate appearance this Monday afternoon, finally the hearing was sent back to September 1st. Until the trial, he has been placed under judicial supervision.

It all starts with a refusal of priority

Originally, a dispute between motorists. The 30-year-old picks up his partner in the Leclerc car park in the Cleunay district when he cuts priority to a female driver on the roundabout at the entrance. She insults him and leaves to park to go to the Stade Rennes match located close by. He follows her and parks next to her. The tone rises, blows are exchanged and witnesses hear cries.

The thirty-year-old gets back into his vehicle, prepares to leave. The woman allegedly spat in his direction, that’s when he pulls a semi-automatic pistol out the window and fires. Slightly injured, the victim in his forties claims to have been hit in the elbow by the bullet. At this stage, the investigation does not confirm it but the casing was found on the spot.

Licensed in a shooting club

The accused practice sport shooting regularly. That day, he had planned to go to his club. When he went to the police station, he had with him in a briefcase the semi-automatic that he took out a few hours earlier. Six other weapons, all declared, were seized from his home.

Unknown to the police, his criminal record is clean. He admits having taken out his weapon in the parking lot of the supermarket but assures that the shooting was not voluntary. The respondent also claims that he thought his pistol was not loaded. Placed under judicial control, the prosecutor had requested his placement in pre-trial detention pending the hearing, citing a risk of recidivism: “He already had the ability to shoot in a place that is always very busy in the middle of the day.”

The victim was prescribed a day of ITT (temporary incapacity for work). She intends to file a civil action.
